Level Of Debt
At end December 2009 the National Debt of Ireland was 75.2 billion euro. This compares with 50.4 billion euro at end 2008.
The rapid increase over the last two years is a result of exceptionally high budget deficits in 2008 and 2009. Fortunately the long period of economic growth and stability which preceded the current crisis meant that Ireland entered the downturn with a relatively low level of debt. The National Debt at the end of January 2010 was 75,966 million euro.
Historical Data is available showing the detailed figures on the National Debt from 1923 to end year 2009.
